Setting term and holiday dates
Warwickshire County Council sets term and holiday dates for all community and voluntary controlled schools.
Academies, foundation, and aided schools set their own dates, and we work with them to keep dates as similar as possible.
School dates change each year. We set them based on these parameters:
- 195 school days - five are teacher training days
- Two training days set by the council, three by schools
- Holidays in full weeks where possible
- A three-weekend break at Christmas and Easter
- A summer holiday close to six weeks
- A pattern as similar as possible to neighbouring councils
Dates are usually published 18 months before the academic year starts. For example, dates for 2025/26 were published by March 2024.

Induction days
There is one induction day for all Warwickshire schools:
- 2025 - Wednesday 2 July
- 2026 - Wednesday 8 July
- 2027 - Wednesday 7 July
If your child attends an academy, independent school, or a school outside of Warwickshire, their induction date may differ. Check with your child’s current school.
Teacher training days
Most schools have five teacher training days each year, when pupils do not attend school.
We set two:
- 2025/26 - 1 September 2025 and 20 July 2026
- 2026/27 - 1 September 2026 and 4 January 2027
Schools set three more days each year. Contact your school for these dates.
Academies and free schools set their own training days.
Taking holiday during term time
Talk to the headteacher of your child's school before booking leave.
Parents may be breaking the law if children take leave without permission.
The school can only approve leave requests made by the parent the child lives with.
Headteachers can only approve leave in exceptional circumstances. They will decide the length of approved leave. They are not allowed to approve leave for holidays.

Religious absence
Schools must authorise absence for religious observance if the day is set apart by your religious body. Schools may contact your religious body to check.
Talk to the headteacher, giving as much notice as possible.
Emergency school closures
Schools will contact parents if they close due to bad weather or other reasons.
Check your school’s website for updates.
We publish a list of closed schools when the school has let us know. This may take time to update when there are many school closures, for example during severe weather.
